Ready for a sweet desi treat… without the guilt!?

I guess you’ve never tried BAKED, SUGAR-FREE gulab jamun before!!

This recipe uses a small amount of coconut oil for the gulab, which are then BAKED instead of deep-frying before being soaked in a STEVIA (or honey) “syrup”! Rose water, saffron and cardamom pods provide the delightful traditional flavour you are looking for!

Our video producer Sarah (who is Indian) and her whole family tasted & APPROVED this recipe!! The question is… will YOU try it out?! 🙂

RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE GULAB:

  • 1 cup instant milk powder
  • ½ cup flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
  • 4 tablespoon of milk.

FOR THE SYRUP:

  • 1 cup Stevia (Eg. Greeniche Stevia) OR 1 cup Honey
  • 1-cup water
  • 1-tbsp cornstarch
  • 4-5 cardamom pods, crushed slightly
  • Saffron (optional)
  • 1/2-tbsp rose water

DIRECTIONS

  1. Make the dough by combining the milk powder, flour, baking soda, and coconut oil.
  2. Start kneading to form dough, which should be moist and not too sticky. Make sure to add milk little by little to form moist dough.
  3. Divide the dough into 20 smaller portions.
  4. Make balls by gently rolling each portion between the palms of your hand into a smooth ball.
  5. Bake at 325 F / 160 C for about 30 mins by turning the balls halfway. Keep an eye on the gulab jamun to avoid burning on the bottom.
  6. While baking, combine the syrup ingredients in a small pot and bring to a boil.
  7. Once it boils switch off the stove when it forms syrup consistency.
  8. Remove the gulab jamun from the oven and once cooled add to the warm syrup. Soak it for half an hour and then serve to unsuspecting family members and see their reactions!

NOTES

If you use stevia, the syrup may form a thin layer when cooled, so be sure to eat while it’s still warm.

If you use honey, you can eat it whenever without worrying about that.

The consistency of the balls are a little different than traditional smooth deep-fried gulab jamun after baking… but this is totally worth it so you can enjoy the tastes of your fav ethnic dessert WITHOUT a deep-fried sugar overload coma!!
