Love cereal? Make sure you’re picking a cereal that’s good for you with these 4 quick shopping tips!

What to look for in a healthy cereal:

  1. High fibre content (Ideally 5 grams or more per serving)
  2. Low sugar (Ideally less than 5-7 grams per serving)
  3. Whole grains
  4. Around 120 calories or less per serving for most cereals

Good examples: 

  • Shredded wheat 
  • Fibre1 cereal
  • Wheatabix
  • Bran Buds
  • Bran Flakes

What to AVOID in cereals: 

  • Most cereals marketed heavily at kids with cartoon characters, etc. Most of these cereal are mostly sugar!
  • Any cereal with SUGAR as the FIRST ingredient on the ingredient list
  • Cereals with preservatives or artificial ingredients or unpronounceable ingredients
  • Front-of-the-box label claims! Read the nutrition label on the BACK of the box!

Use these shopping tips next time you’re at the grocery store to evaluate your favourite cereal! And, if you are currently eating a cereal that is high in not-so-good ingredients, try MIXING your favourite cereal with some high-fibre, low-sugar cereal (and maybe even add some sliced fruits or berries!) to increase the nutrition in your breakfast bowl!
