The Prophet ﷺ said:
“O Allah, bless my nation in their early mornings (i.e., what they do early in the morning).” (Hasan)
MORNING MAKEOVER #1: Reframe your Priorities and bring barakah, protection & gratitude into your day with the incredible morning adkhaar
When it comes to any discussion of morning routines, you usually hear people mentioning meditation and how great it is for focus and gratitude. As Muslims, we have our own tradition for re-focusing our minds and our souls on a daily basis that we need to take ownership of and realize the incredible benefits for our total body health!
The Morning Adhkaar are a series of authentic supplication that The Prophet ﷺ used to make specifically in the morning and in the evening that are compiled in The Fortress of the Muslim (Hisnul Muslim) book. When you recite these duas in the morning, they become a series of powerful mission statements that can reframe your priorities for the entire day!
Common themes in the Morning Adhkaar include:
- Praise, glorification & gratitude to Allah. Many studies have shown the benefit of gratitude in improving our quality of life. In the Islamic tradition, we direct this gratitude to Allah ﷻ directly.
- Placing reliance & trust in Allah ﷻ. There is immense mental relief in asking Allahﷻ to take care of your affairs so you just have to do your best and leave the outcomes to Allah ﷻ!
- Praising Allah ﷻ’s creation and the day and asking for the goodness of the day to come. This makes you PUMPED for an awesome day and helps shift your mindset towards positivity and optimism which has also been shown to increase lifespan!
- Asking Allah ﷻ for barakah, protection and forgiveness. The attitude is that every day is a fresh start!
- Ask for blessing and protection for our body and health. How can you treat your body poorly and neglect your physical health when you are asking Allah for good health every day?!
Going through all the morning dua’as takes approximately 20 minutes. If you go through them with concentration, these dua’as not only can change your entire mindset but you also get good deeds recorded for you as you say them.
MORNING MAKEOVER #2: Pray Salat ul-Duha
The Prophet ﷺ said: “In the morning, every single joint of yours must pay a sadaqah (charity). Every SubhanAllah is a sadaqah, every Alhamdulillāh is a sadaqah, every La Ilaha Illa Allah is a sadaqah, every Allahu Akbar is a sadaqah, every commanding good is a sadaqah, and every forbidding evil is a sadaqah, and all this is accomplished through two rakʿahs one can pray in Duha [prayer].”
The Prophet ﷺ also said: “Whoever regularly prays the two rakʿahs of Duha, his sins are forgiven even if they are like [the vastness of] the foam of the sea.”
And in another Hadith Qudsi, The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah the Exalted says: ‘O Son of Adam, pray to Me in the beginning of the day with four units and I shall thereby suffice you at the end (of it).’”
Timing: The timing of Salat ul-Duha is up until 15 minutes before Dhuhr prayer.
Try: Pray 2 raka’ats Salat ul-Duha after your morning adhkaar, focussing on the cognitions and mainframe established in the dua’as. This will multiply the effects of the adkhaar!
MORNING MAKEOVER #3: Feed your soul with Quran
The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” (Tirmidhi)
The rewards of reciting the Quran are many. In another Hadith, The Prophet ﷺ said: “Verily the one who recites the Quran beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).
Keep it simple! Focus on building a habit of consistency and reading the translation, rather than just trying to read more pages. This is an opportunity to connect with the words of Allah ﷻ!
MORNING MAKEOVER #4: Fulfill the rights of your body with a morning workout!
Don’t neglect your physical health!
Working out in the morning will boost your energy all day long and improve your mental clarity and focus. Studies also show that exercise can act as a “keystone habit”.
